who we are

We desire to be a Church for those who are seeking a fresh approach to understanding the ways of Jesus Christ and for those who are further along in their spiritual journey and desire to continue becoming more like Him. We desire to be a Church that is on a mission with Christ, seeking to see people’s lives and our community transformed by Jesus Christ. We strive to be connected with our community by becoming a church without walls. Susquehanna Valley EFC was formed in the Spring of 1985 and is affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church ofAmerica.  "Evangelical" characterizes an emphasis upon the authority of the Scriptures, a desire to share the good news of salvation in Christ, and the need for personal response to God in every area of life. "Free" denotes the independence of each local Church, though it maintains a relationship with the other Churches in the Evangelical Free Church of America.

Our Vision

Transformational - We seek to become a relevant and life changing church, inspiring people to have an intimate relationship with God. We seek to become a church of passionate worshippers of God who are allowing Him to reign in all areas of our lives. We seek to develop a spiritually healthy community that is engaged in the things that matter to Him. (2 Corinthians 3:18)

Relational - We seek to be an authentic community overflowing with grace, love, and hope that welcomes all people to pursue God without fear of rejection or embarrassment. We seek to be transparent and truthful in telling our personal stories so that others may be encouraged in their faith journey. We seek to be others centered rather than self-centeredness in all we do. (Romans 12:9-16)

Community Focused (Missional) - We seek to be immersed in the story of Jesus and His heart for the Harrisburg area and beyond. Whether young or old, we want to be the seed throwers, initiators, extenders of hope, grace givers, risk takers, and dreamers of His story in the transformation of our community. To be a people who empower the poor, strengthen the weak, embrace the outcasts and seek those outside the community of faith. We seek to be a diverse celebratory church of missional, disciple making communities in every neighborhood (Oikos), whereby we love and serve our neighbors more than ourselves. We seek to become a missional community center utilizing our resources to meet community needs. (Matthew 25:34-40; 5:13-15)

Our strategy is summarized by the phrase, “Catch the WIND” John 3:8, and the acronym: Winning people to faith in Jesus Christ. Instructing each believer to be an effective minister for the Lord Jesus Christ. Nurturing each believer in his/her personal walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. Deploying each believer into service locally or abroad.

1. Biblically Faithful: We believe that Scripture is our final authority and foundation for daily living. The Bible is both timeless and timely, relevant to the common needs of all people at all times.

2. Culturally Relevant: We adapt our ministry to current needs and trends in American life, without compromising biblical absolutes. We are committed to being relevant by using ever changing methods to communicate the never changing message.

3. Authentic Worship: We practice a lifestyle of worship that should fully engage our heart, soul, mind and strength, demonstrating our love and honor for God.

4. Relationally Centered: We believe that ordinary relationships allow extraordinary things to happen. We stress healthy relationships in every aspect of church life. We emphasize that life change happens best in small groups and is a primary means for caring for each other, developing friendships, and sharing life.

5. Prayer Dependent: We rely on prayer in the conception, planning, and execution of all ministries and activities of the church.

6. Grace Oriented: We emphasize God’s unconditional acceptance and love of everyone regardless of their story. We desire to be a church that welcomes all people to pursue God without fear of rejection or embarrassment.

7. People Developing: We desire to help people grow spiritually. We encourage people to discover their SHAPE and engage with a unified community of servants.

8. Ministry Excellence: We desire to maintain a high standard of excellence with all of our resources and in everything we do.

9. Engaging leadership: We believe in the continued development of strong leadership through all generations.

10. Outreach Focused: We desire to be a sent people with an expanded presence in both local and global communities.

Statement of Faith

The Evangelical Free Church of America is an association of autonomous churches united around these theological convictions:

We believe in one God, Creator of all things, holy, infinitely perfect, and eternally existing in a loving unity of three equally divine Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Having limitless knowledge and sovereign power, God has graciously purposed from eternity to redeem a people for Himself and to make all things new for His own glory.

We believe that God has spoken in the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, through the words of human authors. As the verbally inspired Word of God, the Bible is without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for salvation, and the ultimate authority by which every realm of human knowledge and endeavor should be judged. Therefore, it is to be believed in all that it teaches, obeyed in all that it requires, and trusted in all that it promises.

We believe that God created Adam and Eve in His image, but they sinned when tempted by Satan. In union with Adam, human beings are sinners by nature and by choice, alienated from God, and under His wrath. Only through God’s saving work in Jesus Christ can we be rescued, reconciled and renewed.

We believe that Jesus Christ is God incarnate, fully God and fully man, one Person in two natures. Jesus-Israel’s promised Messiah-was conceived through the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived a sinless life, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father as our High Priest and Advocate.

We believe that Jesus Christ, as our representative and substitute, shed His blood on the cross as the perfect, all-sufficient sacrifice for our sins. His atoning death and victorious resurrection constitute the only ground for salvation.

We believe that the Holy Spirit, in all that He does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of its guilt. He regenerates sinners, and in Him they are baptized into union with Christ and adopted as heirs in the family of God. He also indwells, illuminates, guides, equips and empowers believers for Christ-like living and service.

We believe that the true church comprises all who have been justified by God’s grace through faith alone in Christ alone. They are united by the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ, of which He is the Head. The true church is manifest in local churches, whose membership should be composed only of believers. The Lord Jesus mandated two ordinances, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, which visibly and tangibly express the gospel. Though they are not the means of salvation, when celebrated by the church in genuine faith, these ordinances confirm and nourish the believer.

We believe that God’s justifying grace must not be separated from His sanctifying power and purpose. God commands us to love Him supremely and others sacrificially, and to live out our faith with care for one another, compassion toward the poor and justice for the oppressed. With God’s Word, the Spirit’s power, and fervent prayer in Christ’s name, we are to combat the spiritual forces of evil. In obedience to Christ’s commission, we are to make disciples among all people, always bearing witness to the gospel in word and deed.

We believe in the personal, bodily and premillennial return of our Lord Jesus Christ. The coming of Christ, at a time known only to God, demands constant expectancy and, as our blessed hope, motivates the believer to godly living, sacrificial service and energetic mission.

We believe that God commands everyone everywhere to believe the gospel by turning to Him in repentance and receiving the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that God will raise the dead bodily and judge the world, assigning the unbeliever to condemnation and eternal conscious punishment and the believer to eternal blessedness and joy with the Lord in the new heaven and the new earth, to the praise of His glorious grace. Amen.
